My Priest has described it as joyful penitence- twofold, like you said- the Incarnation is Joyful, the Return should be joyful if we are ready. Readiness=Penance, I think.
Additionally, pre- Vatican II we celebrated the Ember Days or Embertide. This is Ember Week, one of four in the year. Wed, Fri and Sat are days of voluntary fasting and partial abstinence for: Repentance. The Souls in Purgatory. To Thank God for natural creation and Seek the Grace to use it prudently.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189415.post-57460611044462386882010-12-01T22:29:38.512-05:002010-12-01T22:29:38.512-05:00My parish priest alternatively uses the reconcilia...My parish priest alternatively uses the reconciliation I and reconciliation II eucharistic prayers during Advent, suggesting a mild penitential attitude. The absence of the Gloria, as well, suggests the same. And a parish near me is running an Advent mission which includes an opportunity for private confession.Moonshadowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11277057132720569896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189415.post-24769238088528110692010-12-01T22:10:59.795-05:002010-12-01T22:10:59.795-05:00Oh yeah, Advent is most definitely a penitential s...Oh yeah, Advent is most definitely a penitential season. Just like you said, it's purple!

Yes, it's a time of joyous expectation where we prepare for the coming of the Lord. But how do you prepare? John the Baptist called everyone to repent of their sins and be baptized in the Jordan as a sign of that repentance. Reconciliation is the most obvious way we do this now. All the parishes around us have reconciliation services during Advent. We clean the house before a special visitor arrives...we do the same for our souls preparing for Christmas.

Fasting and other penitential practices like adding prayer or Masses are other ways to prepare to receive the Lord into our hearts.Marc Cardaronellahttp://marccardaronella.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189415.post-70666054054066776212010-12-01T15:05:28.334-05:002010-12-01T15:05:28.334-05:00This comment is from @dwfordnyc on Twitter:
